My name is Grigoris Polychronidis and I was born on 13th August 1981, in Vatumi, Georgia. I am the second child of Helen and Daniel and have an elder sister, named Maria.
I suffer since the day I was born, from spinal muscular atrophy of type Kugelberg-Welander (SMA III), a disease which does not leave the muscles to be developed, and as a consequence my limbs have very limited and feeble movement.
In September 1989 my family realizes the dream of my grandfather, to return to our homeland, Greece.
We reside in Athens, where I finished school in 2001, earning high marks. In the same year, after examinations I entered in the Department of Accounting and Finance at the Athens University of Economics and Business, which constituted my first choice, because it corresponds immediately to my professional goals.
I have a great command of English (Cambridge Proficiency in English), and Russian (degree of superior level of the Russian language).
The same period that I began my first year at the university, a meeting with my former physiotherapist Mr. George Tzimas, is what trigged my love for this sport. I learn for the existence of a sport named Boccia (a sport that I could play, despite my difficulties in movement), and the ideas of Mr. Tzimas for the creation of a sports association for the development of this sport in Greece.
Immediately, I take part in these plans and the Association becomes a reality on 20th April 2002. In the next month I am elected for the position of the chairman of the new Sports Association "Agios Christoforos". In June of the same year I participate in the National Championships 2002.
Despite that it was the first competition I participated in, I won the gold medal in the individuals BC3.
Up to now, I have won ten gold medals in the individuals (2002 - 2011), and seven gold (2003 - 2011) and a silver one (2005) in the pairs of my category in the National Championships, the 37th place in the individuals in the Boccia World Cup 2003, the 6th place in the individuals in the Paralympic Games of Athens 2004, the 7th place in the individuals and the 4th in the pairs in the Boccia European Championship 2005, the Silver Medal in the individuals and the 11th place in the pairs in the Boccia World Championships 2006, the Silver Medal in the individuals and the 4th place in the pairs in the Boccia World Cup 2007, the Silver Medal in the individuals and the 7th place in the pairs in the Paralympic Games of Beijing 2008, the Gold Medal in the individuals and the Bronze Medal in the pairs in the Boccia European Championship 2009, the 5th place in the individuals and the 4th place in the pairs in the Boccia World Championships 2010, the 4th place in the individuals and the Gold Medal in the pairs in the Boccia World Cup 2011, and the Gold Medal in the individuals in the Europa Cup 2011.
Due to my results, I was No 1 in the World Ranking List of BC3 individuals 2007, 2008, 2009 and No 1 in the World Ranking List of BC3 pairs 2011.
In 2004, in a chain of events to honour the Greek Paralympic Winners of the Paralympic Games of Athens, I was rewarded by the Greek Parliament, the President of the Hellenic Republic, the Prime Minister, the Archbishop of Athens and all Greece, the Undersecretary of Sports and the municipality of Athens, that nominated me as an Honorary citizen of the city, as a result of my big success in the Paralympic Games.
In February 2005, I am elected chairman of the association, for the second time. However the requirements for the acquisition of my degree, as well as my plans for the continuation of my studies on a postgraduate level, but also the need for more time for training, forced me to resign from the position of the Chairman of the Association.
In October 2005, I got my degree and I began to work in one of the biggest company of petroleum products in Greece, EKO. In this company I had also worked in the summer of the years 2002, 2003, 2004 as a student. In June 2008, I start working in the Hellenic Court of Audit.
